Ice clouds in the atmosphere are formed by the nucleation of supercooled aerosol particles, such as the anthropogenic emissions from airplanes. These clouds have important climatic effects as a result of their light-scattering properties.The mechanisms by which ice nucleation occurs in the atmosphere however, are not well-understood.
